Tom Fernandes

Wildlife Safari has worked hard for over thirty six years to earn a reputation that is second to none. We have maintained our high standards of safety, quality, value and service while constantly reviewing and improving our product throughout Africa. And we continue to improve.

Tom Fernandes, the founder of Wildlife Safari, still maintains a “hands on” control over the operation from our head office in Nairobi, Kenya while Trevor Fernandes and his team of safari experts plan your perfect safari from our Subiaco, Western Australian office. We are the only “AFRICA” operator with its head office actually in Africa.

Wildlife Safari has enhanced our selection of luxury safaris to Africa to include only the best wildlife sanctuaries with unsurpassed game viewing from the finest safari lodges and camps. Our city hotels and beach resorts are selected for their unique charm and unequalled service, while our guides are simply the best in Africa. We continue to introduce unique and exclusive features on our luxury “Signature Safaris” to include some of our exclusive experiences that make your safari a journey of a lifetime.

Tom Fernandes and the Wildlife Safari team look forward to welcoming you on safari.

Our Vehicles

Wildlife Safari is one of the few safari operators that owns and operates our entire fleet of custom built 4WD safari vehicles. Every vehicle is custom built to our specifications with comfortable seats, safety belts, large “pop up” photographic roof hatch, dust proofing, luggage storage and cool box with a supply of bottled water. All vehicles carry a first aid kit, spare parts and a selection of field guides. It is also equipped with a radio system to communicate with our Nairobi office. Every Wildlife Safari vehicle undergoes a total service and safety check after every safari in our own maintenance facility. Our vehicles are sold after just three years in service, usually to another safari company. Our “signature safaris” are operated by custom built 4WD vehicles for added safety and comfort. Every 4WD carries a maximum of four (regular 4WD) or six (stretch 4WD) guests so that everyone has a guaranteed window seat and access to the photographic roof hatch for the entire safari, without having to rotate guests during the safari.

Our Guides

The Wildlife Safari team of guides is the best in the business. All our guides are full time employees with an average of thirteen years with the company. Every Wildlife Safari guide has a very broad knowledge about the history, geography, people, cultures, animals and birds of East Africa as well as being an excellent driver with mechanical skills. Each guide has only four or six guests for the entire safari, depending on the type of vehicle, and provides a very personal experience. Wildlife Safari guides consistently score high marks in the Kenya Safari Guides Association rankings and our guides are in demand from repeat guests.

As Wildlife Safari operates its own safari vehicles we offer unlimited game viewing drives. Other companies who hire vehicles and guides limit game viewing guides to a fixed time or mileage limit. Wildlife Safari guides discuss game viewing options that suit our guests, not the company, and will be happy to arrange full day game viewing with an optional picnic lunch at some wildlife sanctuaries. Nature walks are also included in some locations at no additional cost. Our guides always maintain an acceptable distance from wildlife and avoid crowded game viewing situations. Arriving home in the country of my birth is always slightly emotional, even more so late last month as my Emirates flight approached Nairobi airport.

This was my first visit following the post election situation that caught everyone in Kenya, and many more outside the country by complete surprise. Although the violence that followed was limited to small pockets around the country, nearly a thousand people were killed and another 150,000 temporarily displaced from their home areas.

The foreign media, most with the regional bureaus in Nairobi, were quick to paint the picture that the country had succumbed to anarchy and that "paradise was burning". While the loss of a thousand lives is a major tragedy, it's not more than the average monthly death rate from HIV/Aids. Africa is still waiting for the often promised affordable HIV/Aids drugs.

The USA, UK, Italy, Germany, Australia, New Zealand among others were also quick to impose travel embargoes to Kenya, guaranteeing that tourism, the country's largest industry by revenue and employment, dried up virtually overnight. Newspaper, magazine, television and radio coverage during January and much of February continued to give the impression that Kenya was in a state of chaos

In reality, the facts were very different. Despite numerous cancellations nearly 60,000 tourists were on the ground during January and not one single tourist was killed, injured or inconvenienced. The violence was limited to small areas mainly around Lake Victoria and "townships" in Nairobi, Mombasa and Nakuru. Kofi Annan and his team brokered a compromise power sharing deal between both major political parties and the country is working hard to restore the economy and image as the finest wildlife destination.

There are still just over 125,000 internally displaced people living in temporary camps in the Rift Valley towns of Naivasha, Nakuru and Eldoret. Ironically, these camps are sheltering people from same ethnic groups allegedly "at war" but everyone is living harmoniously in these temporary facilities. Bureaucracy is hampering the rapid return of people to their original homes and families face the cooler ''winter'' months at the higher altitudes.

This is where you and Wildlife Safari will make a difference. Wildlife Safari Kenya has purchased a quantity of locally made blankets that we will distribute to families in these temporary camps during May 2008 on your behalf.

Wildlife Safari is not soliciting any contributions towards our "BUY A BLANKET" programme. Instead, we're asking you to support the country by going on safari to Kenya with us during 2008 and we will donate another fifty blankets for every passenger booked on a Wildlife Safari. And if you can't join us on safari, you can assist in other ways by purchasing Kenya products like tea and coffee at your gourmet store or supermarket.

Wildlife Safari is a long established luxury safari company, founded by Tom Fernandes in Nairobi. We have a team of over sixty five full time employees and do not hire independent guides. We own and operate a fleet of more than forty safari vehicles, mostly custom built Toyota 4WD "classic" and "stretch" vehicles, we service "in house".

Every person employed in the tourism industry in Kenya supports an average of twenty four people in their extended families. Continuity of employment is vital as there is no social security system or "dole" in the country. Being an established, conservative family owned business gives us the ability to maintain our entire staff during severe downturns in business at a time when almost all of our peers have drastically reduced staff.

Kenya has survived other calamities and this brief crisis is already fading away.
